Meiosis+Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Describe Meiosis
Meiosis: Cell division that halves the number of chromosomes when forming reproductive cells.
What are the stages of meiosis 1?
Prophase 1- chromosomes condense and nuclear envelope breaks down
Metaphase 1- Chromosomes line up at equator
Anaphase 1- pairs are pulled to poles but stay together
Telephase 1- pairs gather at poles and cytokinins divides the cell
What are the stages of Meiosis 2?
Prophase 2- Spindle fibers form around chromosomes
Métaphase 2- Chromosomes line up at equator
Anaphase 2- centromeres divide and chromosomes are pulled apart
Telephase 2- Nuclear envelope develops around each set of chromosomes
What are diploid and haploid cells?
Diploid: has 2 complete sets of chromosomes
Haploid: has 1 single set of chromosomes
- When during Meiosis do you have crossing over?
Prophase 1
How are mitosis and meiosis different?
- in meiosis steps are repeated twice
- Mitosis produced diploid cells Meiosis haploid cells are produced
- mitosis=cell reproduction meiosis=sex cell reproduction
How does the DNA make its way around the cell to make proteins?
mRNA leaves the nucleus
mRNA+ribosomes attach to eachother
tRNA transports amino acids to the ribosome
Anticodon of tRNA pairs with codon in mRNA
2nd tRNA comes in and pairs with next codon the 2 amino acids from a peptide bond between the amino acids
Amino acids is shaped into protein ( shows function)
