Q

What are some differences in the process of meiosis and mitosis?

A

1) In metaphase I sister chromatid pairs line up along the equator
2) In anaphase I sister chromatid pairs separate
3) Telophase I creates different haploid cells whilst telophase creates identical diploid cells
4) Telophase II creates 4 different cells (gametes)

Q

When are chromosomes single of double stranded during meiosis?

A

Chromosomes are still double stranded after telophase I but single stranded after telophase II.

Q

What is the purpose of mitosis (in multi and unicellular organisms)?

A

Cell division of a diploid parent to produce two identical diploid daughter cells.
1) Growth and repair in multicellular organisms
2) Asexual reproduction in unicellular organisms

Q

Describe the types of asexual reproduction?

A

1) Binary fission: basic replication
2) Budding: bud or outgrowth on original organism because of cell division at a particular site resulting in the development of a new organism
3) Runners: a stem running along the ground that develops into a new organism at the node
4) Fragmentation: organisms split and fragments develop into new organisms
5) Propagation: part of an organism is removed and planted to it regenerates into a new organism
