Meiosis Flashcards
What type of cells are produced by meiosis?
Hapolid cells
Describe the alignment of homologous chromosomes in the fist round of division in meisois
- Homologous chromosomes are paired at the metaphase plate
* Replicated chromosomes align to form a bivalent
When do chiasma develop and what is it?
- Prophase 1
- The point of contact between homologous chromosomes
- Known as crossing over
What is a Holliday junction?
- They are used to help the cutting process of DNA in crossing over
- 4 sets of double stranded DNA with a centre of single stranded DNA
Describe pairing and recombination of sex chromosomes in males
• On the tips of the chromosome, there are pseudoautosomal regions which pair up and act like the rest of the autosome
When does crossing over occur?
During prophase 1
What is uniparently disomy?
• Two chromosomes come from one parent and none from the other
What does genetic distance dictate?
How likely it is that 2 genes will be inherited together (closer=more likely to be inherited together)
What can we use recombination frequency for?
To map the genetic distances between genes
What is recombination useful for?
Genetic diversity
