Meiosis Flashcards
Meiosis
Division of the nucleus which occurs in the
anther, ovary or testis to produce gametes
Homologous chromosomes
Pair of chromosomes with the same genes
at the same points along their length.
Chiasma
Point where crossing over occurs in meiosis
Number of haploid gametes produced during meiosis.
Four haploid gametes
Haploid
One complete set of chromosomes as
found in gametes - 23 in humans
Chromatids
Formed after DNA Replication - they are pulled
apart in the 2nd division of meiosis
Diploid
2 complete sets of chromosomes as found
e.g. in gamete mother cell - 46 in humans
Number of divisions in meiosis
Two divisions
Gamete mother cell
Diploid cell which divides to form haploid gametes in
meiosis
Independent assortment
Random arrangement of homologous pairs of chromosomes on the equator of a cell
Division of the nucleus which occurs in the
anther, ovary or testis to produce gametes
Meiosis
Pair of chromosomes with the same genes
at the same points along their length.
Homologous chromosomes
Point where crossing over occurs in meiosis
Chiasma
Two features of meiosis that result in variation in the gametes.
Independent assortment and crossing over
One complete set of chromosomes as
found in gametes - 23 in humans
Haploid
