Meiosis Flashcards
Where does meiosis occur and what is it?
Meiosis occurs in the testis and ovaries.
Meiosis is when diploid cells divide to produce 4 generically different daughter cells.
What happens in prophase 1?
Chromatin condenses / nuclear membrane dissolves / spindle fibres start to form
What is crossing over and when does it occur?
Crossing over occurs during prophase 1
Non sister chromatids in a homologous pair synapse and form a bivalent.
Sections of the sister chromatids intertwine and exchange alleles
Can also be calledchiasma
What occurs in metaphase l?
Homologous chromosome pairs mine to the equator
Each chromatic is attached at the centromere to a spindle fibre
What is independent assortment?
Random segregation is where The homologous pairs are arranged randomly in pairs along the equator still in their crossed over state.
No pattern when they segregate duringanaphose1
What is anaphase 1 ?
One of each homologous pairs of chromosomes are punted to oppsise sides of the cell
What is telophase 1?
The chromosomes condense
The nucleus starts to reform
Cleavage furrow pinches the cell into 2
What happens in prophase 2?
The nuclear membrane dissolves
Chromatin unravels
Chiasma does not occur
What happens in metaphase two?
Chromosomes line up at the equator
Spindle fibres attach at the centromere
3rd place of genetic variation
What happens in anaphase 2?
The centromeres divide and the chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell
What happens in telophase2?
The separated chromosome uncoil and the membrane reforms
This is followed by cytokinesis to give 4 haploid cells
