Meiosis Flashcards
Why is meiosis important (what’s its purpose?)? Do all organisms use meiosis?
The purpose of meiosis is to produce gametes with half the number of chromosomes to ensure genetic diversity.
What is the relationship between a gene and an allele?
A gene is the instructions for a particular trait while an allele is a different version of the trait.
What is the difference between sister chromatids and homologous chromosomes?
Sister chromatids are identical while homologous chromosomes are similar but not identical.
How many chromosomes do humans have?
We have 46 total, 23 from each parent.
What is the difference between a diploid cell and a haploid cell?
Diploid Cell: Double set of chromosomes, two copies of each chromosome
Haploid: Single set, only one copy of each chromosome
What is genetic variation important?
Diversity increases chances of survival and also allows for resistance against diseases.
What is a tetrad? Where does formation of a tetrad occur during meiosis? When is the tetrad broken apart?
