Chromosomes Flashcards
What is Chromatin?
Chromatin is present through interphase, this is when the cell isn’t dividing. Chromatin is made up of proteins and DNA. Chromatin plays a crucial role in storing, packaging, and organizing DNA inside the cell’s nucleus
What is Chromatid?
A chromatid is the duplicated half of a chromosome. Chromatids make sure that an equal amount of genetic information is distributed during mitosis and meiosis.
During cell division, chromatids are responsible for ensuring that each daughter cell receives an identical set of chromosomes.
What are Sister chromatids?
Sister chromatids are two identical copies of a single chromosome that are produced by DNA replication during the S phase of the cell cycle. They are held together by a structure called the centromere.
What is a chromosome?
Chromosomes are bundles of genetic material that are stored within the nucleus of the cell.
Why are telomeres important?
Telomeres are almost like a helmet at the end of the chromosome which prevents damage and tangling. They also put uncontrolled cell growth into order preventing cancer.
What is the relationship between sister chromatids?
Sister chromatids are identical copies of a chromosome and they stick together until it is time to divide.
