Cell Cycle Flashcards
Name every phase in the cell cycle.
Prophase: Chromosomes condense, and the nuclear envelope dissolves.
Metaphase: Chromosomes line up at the cell’s center.
Anaphase: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles.
Telophase: Chromosomes unwind, and nuclear envelopes reform around them
What happens during each stage of interphase?
G1: Cell grows bigger
S: DNA replication - sister chromatids form
G2: Cell prepares for cell division
What are checkpoints in the cell cycle and why are checkpoints important?
Checkpoints make sure that everything is prepared for the next phase of the cycle and that there will be no complications.
What is apoptosis and when is it used?
Apoptosis is basically a self-destruct button for cells that are damaged or for cells that are no longer going to be used.
Explain how mitosis is important for these different types of organisms.
Single celled organisms: Allows them to reproduce
Multicellular organisms: It is necessary for them to grow and develop
