Meiosis Flashcards
meiosis definition:
is the process where a single germ cell divides 2 times to produce 4 cells containing half the original amount of genetic information
diploid cell:
a cell with a complete set of chromosomes
haploid cell:
a cell with half the number of chromosomes
what are haploid and diploid cells?
these are known as our reproductive cells, also known as gametes.
in males gametes are called:
sperm
in females gametes are called:
eggs
what are homologous chromosomes?
one diploid parent cell contains one copy of each chromosome from each parent. They carry the same genes.
if a fruit fly has 8 chromosomes in their body, how many chromosomes would their gametes have?
4
why is it important for gametes to be haploid?
Because sperm cells need to fertilize the eggs to become a whole diploid cell.
