evolution Flashcards
define evolution:
the process where a group of species/organisms are born with a competitive advantage to adapt/survive in their environment. This species would grow larger over time.
There are heritable trait variations within a new population
some bacteria are antibiotic resistant and some are not
something changed in the environment that the population was in (or went into)
adding antibiotics was the change in the environment
the environmental change put selection pressure on the population so that some variations had a competitive advantage for survival.
the antibiotics put selection pressure on the population so that bacteria that are antibiotic resistant, will have a more competitive advantage for survival.
when there are resources available, those organisms that survive will reproduce and they will make more organisms with the same traits/variations.
the bacteria that has antiobiotic resistance will survive and make more organisms with the same traits/ variations
Describe Darwin’s theory of natural selection
changes in an organism during its lifetime do not affect the traits passed to its offspring, and doesn’t effect evolution.
Some organisms will have heritable trait variations that give a competitive advantage for survival
organisms are born with these traits
define competitive advantage:
more likey to have a chance of survival
define selection pressure:
a change in the environment that gives a group of organisms a better chance of survival.
What happens to antibiotic-resistant bacteria over time?
the non-antibiotic-resistant bacteria would eventually get all killed, while the antibiotic-resistant bacteria would reproduce every 20 minutes
