12
Q

What is crossing over?

A

Crossing over between homologous pairs of chromosomes is where alleles are exchanged. This creates new allele combinations on chromatids (called recombinant chromatids), which leads to the genetic variation.

14
Q

What is independent assortment?

A

Independent assortment of chromosomes is where the homologous chromosome pairs randomly align on the equator of the cell. This creates new chromosomal combinations.

Q

What happens during Anaphase I ?

A

Homologous pairs are pulled to opposite poles of the cells by spindle fibres. Centromere doesn’t divide.

Q

What happens during Telophase I ?

A

Two new nuclei form, each containing one of the homologous pair of chromosomes

17
Q

What happens during Prophase II ?

A

Chromosomes become visible and condensed. Does not follow DNA replication. No crossing over.

18
Q

What happens during Metaphase II ?

A

Chromosomes align on the equator. Not in pairs.

19
Q

What happens during Anaphase II ?

A

Chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell by spindle fibres.

20
