meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
sexual reproduction
A
produces genetically different cells
2
Q
sexual reproduction definition
A
involves the fusion of male and female gametes. because there’s 2 parents, offspring contains a mixture of parents genes
3
Q
how does it work
A
- parents produce gametes. sperm and egg
- gametes are haploid, contains half number of chromosomes. =23
- fertilisation - male gamete fuses with female gamete to form zygote (fertilised egg).
- zygote does cell division and develops into embryo
- embryo inherits features from both parents
- fertilisation of gametes is random, produces genetic variation in offspring

Q
gametes produced by meiosis
A
- before cell starts to divide, duplicates DNA, so there’s an exact copy.
- chromosomes line up in pairs.
- paris pulled apart.
- each new cell with have a mixture of chromosomes.
- in second division, chromosomes line up at centre of cell and arms of chromosomes are pulled apart.
- 4 haploid hpgametes. each gametes has single set of chromosomes. gametes are genetically different
