– Disadvantages – slow onset, may be a
problem in overdose (TCA’s)
– May use (carefully) with benzodiazepine

– Short acting (Xanax) – less risk of sedation
– Long acting (Klonopin) – less risk of a
discontinuation syndrome
– Advantages – effective, rapid onset
– Disadvantages – depression, dependence,
(withdrawal can be lethal), disinhibition
(especially in the elderly), ataxia,
contraindicated in pregnancy
– Use as a short term treatment
