MEDIEVAL BREADTH Study 2: Parliament Flashcards

1
Q

Outline the argument that parliament helped monarchs financially (so a prop)?

A

Henry V- personality and capability influenced how willing parliament were to give him taxes (i.e.) Agincourt, which gave parliament confidence in granting him taxes. After Agincourt, parliament had already decided Henry should be granted more taxes (before he’d even gotten back!), and was granted Tonnage and Poundage for life. Also, due to past experiences during his father’s reign, he knows how to handle them.

Henry VII- granted custom duties for life (approx. £900,000!)

Q

In terms of monarch having control over parliament, what is some evidence that parliament was used to keep common people happy? (prop)

A

Richard III discussed many petitions in his only parliament, regarding law & order, trade, immigrant etcetc. However, the king had the right to refuse to grant what was requested . He could also organise for his own bills to be presented, thus allowing the crown to steer the law-making process as well.

Q

What is evidence that parliament controlled monarchs financially?

A

If they decided to stop granting taxes then this could limit the king.

(i.e.) When Henry V was getting seriously into debt, parliament started refusing him taxes.
