Medications Flashcards
Furosemide (fyuor-row-suh-mide):
diuretic for hypertension (usually 40-80mg prescribed)
Loop diuretics inhibit reabsorption from the ascending limb of the loop of Henlé in the renal tubule and are powerful diuretics.
Furosemide Side effects
Hypokalemia (confusion, weakness, abnormal heart rhythms)
Increased urination
Increased thirst/dry mouth
Headaches
Nausea
Dizziness
Fatigue
Muscle spasms
Furosemide Conta-indications
Pts with diabetes, hypotension or pathologies of the liver and kidney.
Nebivolol (ne-BIV-oh-lol)
Beta-blocker.
Nebivolol blocks β1-adrenergic receptors in the heart, preventing the binding of stress hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline.
This action slows down heart rate and reduces the force of heart contractions, ultimately lowering blood pressure and decreasing the workload on the heart
Nebivolol side effects
Cold hands and feet
Constipation; oedema; postural hypertension
Uncommon:
Dyspepsia; intermittent claudication; skin reactions
Nebivolol Contra-indications
- in combination with verapamil or diltiazem (risk of heart block)
- with bradycardia (heart rate less than 50 beats per minute), or second- or third-degree AV block (contra-indicated; risk of complete heart block, asystole)
- in diabetes mellitus patients with frequent hypoglycaemic episodes (risk of suppressing hypoglycaemic symptoms)
- Can’t be used in asthma or other respiratory disease - constricts airways, increased chance of bronchospasm (tightening of airways).
- Beta-blockers should be gradually stopped to avoid sudden reproductions of symptoms and rise in BP.
Stexerol
Colecalciferol (ko-lee-kal-si-fuh-ro) - It is prescribed to raise low levels of vitamin D quickly.
Stexerol side effects
GI pain
Feeling sick
Headaches
