Half life:
The time taken for the drug to reduce concentration by 50%
Used to calculate intervals for repeat doses
Therapeutic index:
Higher the index, safer the drug, less chance of accidentally reaching toxic levels e.g. Penicillin
Therapeutic effect:
The expected or predicted physiological effect of the drug.
Side effects and adverse reactions:
Side effect: Occurs when the drug causes an unintended secondary effect.
Adverse reaction: Unexpected immunological response. Can be due to the drug effect , how it was used or the bodies response. Can be mild – (rash) to life threatening reaction (anaphylaxis)
If you cannot read a doctors order:
- Do not give a drug if you cannot read the order.
- Contact a Dr to rewrite the order.
Buccal oral medication:
Medication placed between teeth and mucous membrane of mouth until dissolved
Sublingual oral medication:
Drug is placed under the tongue, where it is dissolved.
Mistake on medication order:
Put an astrix along side error and at bottom of page write in error and why I.E, wrong drug and sign
Discard unwanted medication:
Always draw up all of the liquid in the ampoule and discard what you do not need
Anywhere that the medication can not be retrieved
Down the sink
Sharps container
Garbage bin
NEVER put back into ampoule
Never leave in syringe to discard
