Seven Rights of Medication Administration
Patient, Dose, Route, Time, Drug Documentation and right to refuse
Sterile
Free of all life forms.
How many times should you check med label before administration?
3 times.
Transdermal
Absorbed through the skin at a slow, steady rate. This route of administration can be unpredictable.
Mucous Membranes
Nose, mouth, rectal and vaginal. Absorbed at a moderate to rapid rate.
Sublingual
Spray or pill placed between the underside of the tongue and the floor of the oral cavity.
Buccal
Between cheek and gums. Dissolves very quickly.
Nasal Medications
Narcan, benxodiazepenes and Ativan.
ET Medications
Narcan, Atropine, Vasopressin, Epinephrine and Lidocaine.
Enteral Drugs
Absorbed in the GI tract. Pt must be able to protect their own airway.
Parenteral Drugs
Drugs that are not absorbed through the GI tract.
Drug labels
Name, Concentration, Amount of drug and Expiration date.
Intradermal
15 degree angle into the dermis. Ex. PPD tests and allergy tests.
Intramuscular
90 degree angle into the muscle. Hold skin taut and inject into a large muscle group (deltoid, gluteus)
Subcutaneous
45 degree angle into the cutaneous tissue.
