Promoting adherence/concordance
it is outdated to refer to patients who refuse medication as ‘non-compliant’. we should refer to this as ‘non-adherance’.
what does covertly mean?
‘without being openly acknowledged or displayed (secretly)’. where deemed necessary by the prescriber, medication is given to a person covertly when they refuse their medication and who are considered to lack the mental capacity to make this decision. this takes places within a legal framework and is not just decided.
