Rescue/Quick relief medication for treatment of acute episodes of bronchospasm
Albuterol (Ventolin) - 2.5 mg, Levalbuterol (Xopenex)
LABA
Maintenance/Long-Term control medication for asthma and COPD to control symptoms
Salmeterol (Serevent), Formoterol, Arformoterol
Anticholinergics
Work against bronchoconstriction caused by parasympathetic nervous system.
Ipratropium bromide (Atrovent), Tiotropium bromide
Corticosteriods
Anti-inflammatory agents with direct and indirect bronchodilating effects indicated for asthma and COPD
Fluticason (Flovent), Budesonide (Pulmicort), Prednisone
Mucolytics
Recommended when secretions are thick and tenacious
Acetylcysteine (Mucomyst)
Pulmozyme - cystic fibrosis patients
Mast Cell Stabilizers
Prevent asthma attack by inhibiting the degranulation of mast cells, preventing release of histamine and leukotrienes
Cromolyn sodium (Intal, Aarane)
Inotropic Agents
Increase strength of myocardial contraction
Indications: CHF, atrial tachycardia and fibrillation
Digitalis and Digoxin
Anti-arrhythmic Agents
Ventricular arrhythmias: Lidocaine - control of PVC, stable ventricular tachycardia
Bradycardia: Atropine, Epinephrine
Vasodilator (Decrease Blood Pressure)
Sodium Nitroprusside, Milrinone
Vasoconstrictor/Vasopressor (Increase Blood Pressure)
Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Dopamine, Dobutamine
Diuretics
Furosemide (Lasix) - pulmonary edema, liver and kidney disease, CHF
Mannitol - cerebral edema, drug toxicity and drug overdose
Sedatives - Benzodiazepines
Manage fear and anxiety, increase comfort while receiving MV, induce sleep
Diazepam (Valium), Midazolam (Versed)
Anesthetics
Reduces patients ability to perceive sensations
Propofol (Diprivan) - short acting
Ketamine
Analgesics
Reduce sensations of pain, can cause respiratory depression at higher doses
Can be reversed with Naloxone (Narcan)
Morphine, Fentanyl, Codeine, Meperidine (Demerol)
Surfactant Replacement Therapy
Used to prevent and treat IRDS/HMD
Prophylactic: administered immediately after birth
Rescue: when infants have signs & symptoms of RDS
Calfactant (Infasurf), Beractant (Survanta)
