Medical Emergency Preparedness Flashcards
5%
overdose
give oxygen, call 911
anaphylactic shock
place PT in supine position, give oxygen, give EPI injection
epilepsy
protect PT from falling and self harm, remove from dental chair onto floor
what is epilepsy
uncontrollable muscular contractions and relaxation, a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of seizures
what is anaphylactic shock
occurs when there is an allergic reaction
how to help a choking victim
put PT on floor, attempt finger sweep, apply firm upward thrust
if PT is conscious
preform heimlich maneuver
asthma
give antihistamine, call 911, give EPI
what is asthma
histamine is released in the body
Hyperventilation
ask PT to breath in bag
what is hyperventilation
is a condition in which PTs start to breathe very fast due to low levels of carbon dioxide
emphysema
oxygen therapy is required
what is emphysema
lung condition that causes shortness of breathe
diabetic PTs
ask pt when they last ate, avoid stress, monitor pt
angina pectoris
give nitroglycerin tablet under the tongue, give oxygen, call 911 if not subsiding
what is angina pectoris
heart is unable to receive oxygen, symptoms are dull aching pain in the chest radiating to the lower jaw, left shoulder, and left arm
anemia
have low blood cell counts which impact blood clotting and healing process
scarlet fever
recommended to take antibiotics, premed is required prior to dental treatment
rheumatic fever
premed
artificial joint
premed
ulcer
PT should be using acid reducing meds
hemorrhage
excess bleeding occurs
myocardial infraction
heart cells die
syncope
fainting, temporary decrease in blood flow or oxygen to the brain
nitrous oxide & oxygen equipment
nitrous oxide cylinder(blue in color), oxygen cylinder(green), pressure gauge, flowmeters, emergency air intake valve, nasal hood
pressure gauge
indicates the pressure in psi
flowmeters
measures quantity of gas being delivered
emergency air intake valve
provides atmospheric air
nasal hood
also called nosepiece mask
administration of nitrous oxide
always monitor BP an pulse during sedation, check equipment before use, start oxygen(5 liters per min for a few mins), start nitrous oxide after oxygen with approximately 1 liter increment(range: 5-8 liters), never more than 50% level nitrous oxide administered, inform PT that they may experience a tingling feeling in the hands and feet, administer 100% oxygen 3-5 min after treatment, PT sit for few mins before leaving
Cardiac arrest
start BLS procedure
