medical conditions and the peridontium Flashcards
what effects does diabetes have on the peridontium?
affects the tissues response to plaque due to vascular changes inhibited o2 transport and wbcells.
changes in PMNL function resulting in decreased phagocytosis of cells causing destruction
what effects can down syndrome have on the peridontium?
more prone to infections and to destructive periodontitis
susceptibility to perio due to impaired chemotaxis and phagocytosis of PMNLs
what occurs in hypophophatasia?
premature exfoliation of deciduous teeth
absence of gingival inflammation
loss of alveolar bone- 1st incisors and canines
what occurs in papillon lefevre syndrome?
premature exfoliation of deciduous teeth
early eruption of permanents
aggressive perio causing loss of permanent dentition
what occurs in hereditary gingival fibromatosis?
enlarged gingival tissues
what occurs in mucopolysaccharidosis?
delayed eruption
small widely spaced teeth
gingival enlargement
what occurs in crohns disease?
apthous ulceration
cobblestone mucosa
mucosal tags
enlargement of attached gingiva
what occurs in sarcoidosis?
swelling of parotid gland and cervical lymph nodes
occasional gingival swelling
what are oral manifestations of anaemia?
pale mucosa and tongue
smooth tongue
apthous ulceration
what is aplastic anaemia caused by?
drugs, chemicals, radiation
what is evident orally re. aplastic anaemia?
gingival bleeding
infection
what can occur orally in neutropenia?
ulceration
severe gingivitis with profuse bleeding
rapid periodontal bone loss
what can occur orally in leukaemia?
ulceration petechiae gingival enlargement bleeding infections
what is lichen planus?
inflammatory disease of mucous membranes and skin
what forms can lichen planus take?
reticulated form- interlacing white lines on cheek and gingivae
erosive lichen planus- occurs on gingivae
