How would you explain why you need to take a medical chart to a client?
I need to take a medical chart because I work with therapeutically active products and electrical therapy. This will allow me to give you an optimum treatment and this ensures that I use the appropriate products that will suit you best.
What words or phrases should you avoid using when explaining why you need a medical chart to a client?
Avoid using phrases such as “cause problems” or “electrical equipments or machines”
What should you note in red on a client chart of a client who has allergies?
- Mark what they are allergic to
- List any products that you must avoid which contain the allergen
What must you ALWAYS do before beginning a treatment on a client who has an anaphylactic allergy?
Double check the ingredients in any product you are using to make sure it does not contain the allergen.
What kind of oil is commonly used in skin care and should not be used on someone that has a nut allergy?
Almond oil
What kind of products should you use on someone with an allergy to fragrances or perfumes?
Unscented products
You would not use a product with royal jelly in it on a client who has what kind of allergy?
Bee allergy
Why would you do a waxing patch test?
If a client is allergic to adhesive
Why would you do a patch test on a client with multiple allergies?
Clients who have multiple allergies or if they are unsure of an allergy should have a patch test using your product line to check for reactions with the ingredient list.
What are contraindications for a client with a UV allergy?
- Avoid LED lights
- Avoid IPL
- Avoid laser
What kind of gloves should you avoid and what kind of gloves should you wear instead?
Latex - due to common latex allergy
Choose vinyl or nitrile instead
What precautions do you take with a client who has allergies?
- Mark chart in red
- Look at ingredient list
- Do a patch test if necessary
- Give samples for the client to try
What should you mark in red on your client chart if a client has a metal implant? (Contraindications)
Mark the location of the implant on the chart and state “No indirect electrical therapy”
What is a special concern for a client with an IUD?
Electricity may conduct heat in the metal which can cause scarring to the surrounding tissue or it may cause the implant to shift.
Why can you still do electrical therapy on a client with a titanium implant?
Titanium is not magnetic and does not conduct electricity.
If a client has a metal pin in their knee can you still do indirect or direct electrical therapy?
- No indirect electricity
- No direct electricity over the area with the pin
- Can do direct electricity on other parts of the body
What should you mark on your chart for a client who is taking medication?
- List all medications in the appropriate spot on the chart
- Specific contraindications associated with the use of the drug need to be marked on your chart in red.
Why would you research medications?
Medications may be researched for possible side effects such as rashes, acne, hair growth, chloasma, photosensitivity, easy bleeding or bruising.
What are some examples of medication that should be notes?
- Accutane
- Topical acne medication
- Blood thinners
- Steroids
What are the contraindications for someone who is taking medications that are photosensitive?
- No UV therapy
- Avoid LED lights, IPL and laser
What would you mark in red on a clients chart for a client who has cancer?
- Mark if they are currently undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or other treatments
- State no electrical therapy at all, no UV, no laser, IPL or essential oils
What are contraindications to cancer?
- No electrical therapy at all
- No UV
- No laser
- No IPL
- No essential oils
Why would you check cancer medication for side effects?
Because side effects are numerous and skin sensitivities are common
Why should you not use essential oils on a client with cancer?
It could potentially stimulate the cells
What should you mark in red on clients chart who has an IUD containing copper?
- No indirect or direct electrical therapy
What are some common side effects of the birth control pill?
- Melasma
- Acne
- Excessive hair growth
- Water retention
- Photosensitivity
What would you advise a client of in regards to sun exposure and tanning beds who is taking birth control?
Potential risk of photosensitivity
What are the contraindications you would mark in red on a pregnant clients chart?
- No electrical therapy at all
- Do not place client directly on their back
How would you help make a pregnant client more comfortable?
- Place pillows under her knees
If a client is pregnant what must you use cautions with? Or if they are nursing?
Essential oils
What might you notice on a client who is pregnant or recently given birth?
Pregnant - Devitalized skin - Acne Recently Given Birth - Hair loss - Chloasma mask - Devitalized skin
What would you mark in red on a client chart for a client who has diabetes?
- No electrical therapy
- No paraffin
- No cuticle cutting
What are the additional contraindications to diabetes?
- No hair removal (unless they consult a doctor)
Why can’t you clip a diabetics cuticles?
- Poor circulation
- Higher risk of infection
Why should you note any diabetic medications?
Insulin may be photosensitive
What are diabetics prone to?
Infection and poor healing
What should you mark in red on a client chart of someone with hyperthyroid disease? (contraindications)
- No electrical therapy!
Also no massage around neck region where thyroid gland is located
What can electrical therapy and massage cause in a client with hyperthyroidism?
A thyroid storm
- Rapid heart rate
- Increase in blood pressure
What are symptoms of hyperthyroid disease?
- Weight loss
- Nervousness
What are symptoms of hypothyroid disease?
- Dehydration of the skin
- Hair loss
- Weight gain
/What are the contraindications to high blood pressure?
- No electrical therapy - if uncontrolled (mark in red on chart)
What are the precautions to high blood pressure?
- Check medication for side effects
- Use calming treatments
- Use care with active massage
- Skin may show redness due to circulation or medication flushing
What are the contraindications to low blood pressure?
Do not let them sit up too quickly as client may become faint
What are precautions to a client with low blood pressure?
- Keep hands and feet warm
- Prone to poor circulation
- Use active treatment, and gentle massage to improve treatment
What are different ways the skin may demonstrate poor circulation?
- The skin may be pale, have erythrosis, extreme dehydration, or edema
- Cold hands and feet
- Visible varicose veins
- Skin may be slow to heal and prone to infection
Can you wax over an area with varicose veins?
No
Why should you avoid rigorous massage on a client with poor circulation?
As circulation increases it may become painful
- Use effleurage only until circulation improves.

Precautions
- Keep warm - prone to poor circulation
- Check all medication
- Clients are often on blood thinners and may bleed or bruise easily
- Prone to high blood pressure
- Keep clients head elevated if the have shortness of breath
Can cholesterol deposits be extracted?
They cannot be extracted through normal extractions but can be removed by vasculyse
- They resemble very large milia
What are the contraindications for clients with respiratory conditions?
Mark on chart in red if its necessary to avoid steam
Why do you need to use cautions with pulverization (steam/sprays) on clients with respiratory conditions?
Some clients may find steam beneficial while others may not - make sure to apply if from a greater distance and stay with the client.
What do you need to be aware of with a client who has asthma?
Their triggers
What kind of problems benefit from steam and eucalyptus essential oil?
Sinus issues
What are some other precautions for clients with respiratory issues?
- Caution with oils and fragrances - the very sensitive or highly asthmatic client may need to be in a separate room
- Keep head elevated if they have trouble breathing
What are contraindications to back pain?
- Avoid areas for massage - mark in red on chart
What are precautions to clients with back pain?
- Make comfy with pillows under knees to relieve pressure
- No massage on area if an injury or whiplash has occurred
- Position head for comfort
- Check for medications (may be taking anti-inflammatories which this the blood)
What are some precautions to a client with neck problems?
- No pressure around the neck if whiplash or trauma. Support the neck and use light massage on the area.
- If stress - use strong massage with relaxing essential oils
What should you mark in red on the chart of a client with neck problems?
If problem is the result of an injury or trauma - no massage in the area
What are contraindications for a client with epilepsy?
Mark in red - no electrical therapy at all, no LED lights, laser or IPL
- Can stimulate a seizure
What are precautions wth massage for a client with epilepsy?
- Do not over activate the circulation with rigorous massage of a client who has epilepsy
- Use effleurage movements only
What is epilepsy?
A central nervous system disorder in which the brain actively becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, sensations and sometimes loss of awareness.
What are precautions for a client with headaches?
- Ensure client is comfortable and positioned well
- Lower lights
- If headaches are a result of trauma use neck problem precautions
What are some precautions for a client who is hyper nervous?
- Be attentive
- Talk through every step with your client
- No electrical therapy if client is not relaxed
- Provide a very relaxed atmosphere
- Sit client up during mask
- If claustrophobic, do not use steam or sprays, eye pads, etc.
What might you notice on a client who has digestive issues?
- Cellulite may be present
- Pustules under the cheekbones
- Skin very sallow in colour
(all things here may also apply to elimination issues)
If a client has diarrhea what might you notice?
- Skin may be dehydrated
- Sudden weight loss
