What is the BBC Radio?
A public service broadcaster that operates several National stations (e.g Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio Scotland), and local radio stations (e.g Radio Leeds)
What is significant about each of the BBC Radio stations?
They each have a distinct identity and target a particular audience.
Radio 1 audience?
15-29 year olds (interested in pop music)
Radio 2
Mixture of young and old (plays variety of music) -> largest audience.
Is BBC Radio profit?
Non-profit as payed by license fee
What are Community Radio Stations?
Stations cover small areas in a local community, with the workers being volunteers (often where radio stars start).
Are Community Radio Stations for profit?
Non-profit (funded by charity, grants, sponsorship, advertising).
What are Commercial Radio Stations?
Profit radio stations (funded by advertising), that also use convergence by running TV stations (e.g Magic TV).
How many Commercial Radio Stations are there and which are the biggest?
Over 30 in Britain. Two biggest are Britain are Global and Baver.
What is DAB and what does it do?
Digital Audio Broadcast (has better quality of sound). It provides access to a much wider range of radio stations.
What are examples of radio stations that DAB provides?
Virgin Radio, BBC1 Xtra -> digital only stations
Examples of how DAB allows audiences to experience a programme in different ways?
Streaming (on a phone, computer, tablet).
Listening on catch-up sessions (e.g BBC Sounds)
Consuming content on social media.
Who are podcasts produce by?
Radio broadcasters
What do podcasts offer?
They offer audiences the opportunity to download an episode and listen when they choose. Plus, they offer additional content (e.g edified highlights) from the original programme.
