What is the enigma code
Some parts of a narrative aren’t fully explained and it is the audience’s job to work it out
Archetype
An original which many copies are based on. This is often to do with characters such as the villain, the hero,
Cross head
Words used as a title or sub heading to break up text in a newspaper
Enigma
A mystery or question not immediately solved which draws the audience in
Semiotics
The study of sign and sign systems and their meaning which is known as semiology
Conventions
Established rules or shared understandings used in media products. They are not likely to be written down
Media language
How elements of media language influence meaning. How they create narratives, portray aspects of reality and construct points of view.
Antagonist
The character who disrupts the protagonist
Cross cut
An editing technique used to show action happening at the same time
Anchorage
Text which fixes (anchors) an image and its meaning
