⭐️ media influences - desensitisation. cognitive priming and disinhibition✅ Flashcards
→what is desensitisation?
→what is disinhibition?
→what is cognitive priming?
- reduced sensitivity to a stimulus bc the body is used to it - can be physical or psych.
- when normal restraints are loosened and agg becomes normalised as a response in certain circumstances.
- they way a person thinks is triggered by cues or scripts which prepare us for response
role of desensitisation:
what normally happens s when witnessing violent behav.?
what happens when children repeatedly view agg? what does this do?
- we experience physiological arousal associated with the sympathetic nervous system eg sweating
- they become used to it, reducing the impact when watching it on tv or on a game.
this promotes the belief that using agg. as a way of resolving conflict is socially acceptable, negative attitude towards violence decreases and less empathy is felt for injuries ppl.
role of desensitisation:
what did WEISZ + EARLS look at? (rape trial)
what did they do?
what did they find?
- they conducted a lab study highlighting desensitisation effects
- they showed ppts videos of a reenactment of a rape trial - graphic
- compared to those who watch he’d a non- sexually violent film, male viewers of the rape film showed greater acceptance of sexual agg. and less sympathy for rape victims in the trial. they were less likely to find the defendant guilty - THIS DIDNT AFFECT WOMEN
role of disinhibition:
why are their social and psych. inhibitions?
how is this learnt?
what happens usually in video games?
- feelings of not being relaxed, against using agg. to resolve conflict
- by processes explain by the SLT. usual restraint are loosened after exposure to violent media, especially if it minimises the effects on the victim or justifies it.
- agg. is normally praised such as killing someone in GTA to get a nice car … this becomes the norm to the viewers
role of cognitive priming:
what is it?
who talks about the scripts in our mind?
when are these scripts triggered?
what can the effects be?
aggressive images in the media act as cues for script in our head of an aggressive behav.
HUESMANN - says this script is in our memory so we are ready for agg. - mostly an automatic process, directing our behav. without us being aware of it
the scripts are triggered when we encounter cues in a similar context, triggers memories leading to reproduction of aggression
can either be specific or general
ao3:
✅ 3 strengths
❌ weakness?
✅ research bu KRAHE to support desensitisation - showed violent and non violent clips, the habitual violent viewers showed less arousal to the Vclips
✅ Weisz and earls support with the rape trial study… desensitisation.
✅ cog. priming has life saving benefits in real life - ANDERSON + BUSHMAN
❌ desensitisation fails to explain all types of agg. - KRAHE’S study failed to find a lie between media viewing, less arousal and reactive agg. - carthasis may be a better explanation, viewing violent media is a safety valve allowing ppl to release agg.
