Measurement of Renal Function Flashcards
What does GFR reflect?
Kidney function
What is meant by renal plasma clearance of substance?
The amount of blood cleared of a substance per minute.
What is the equation for clearance of substance?
CoS = (Urine conc x Urine vol)/(Plamsa conc x time)
What substance gives the best result if testing GFR?
Inulin
What is commonly used to test GFR?
Creatinine
When does CoS = GFR?
- When it is freely filtered in the glomerulus
- When it is not secreted or reabsorbed
- When it isn’t metabolised by the body
What is creatinine released by?
Skeletal muscle
How is estimated GFR calculated?
eGFR is determined by looking at age, gender, ethnicity, body weight and serum creatinine.
When is looking at eGFR not valid?
In cases of sudden changes in kidney function, pregnancy and amputation
What is the nephrotic range of proteinuria?
More than 3g of protein excreted a day
How can kidney function effect blood pressure?
CKD causes high blood pressure.
High blood pressure worsens CKD.
Explain the production and effect of EPO.
- Hypoxia is detected in the JGA of the kidneys.
- JGA secrete erythropoeitin.
- EPO stimulates erythropoeisis in red bone marrow.
- Erythropoeisis increases RBC count.
- Blood O2 level returns to normal and EPO production decreases.
On average how much urine is produced in 24 hours?
Between 1 and 2 litres
EPO is produced where?
The JGA of the kidneys.
