Measure of Central Tendency Flashcards
Define the term Quantitative
Something that is measured or counted
Define the term Categorical
Nominal or Ordinal data
Define Descriptive statistics
Measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion
State the three measures of central tendency
Mean
Median
Mode
Define the term Mean
Calculated by summing up all scores and dividing by the number of scores (N)
Describe the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Mean
Advantage: considers all information. Provides basis for many additional calculations. Appropriate for quantitative but not categorical data.
Disadvantage: very sensitive measure to extreme scores
Define the term Median
Mid point of a set of ranked scores
Calculated by putting all scores in rank order
Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the Median
Advantage: unaffected by extreme scores
Disadvantage: doesn’t account for all data. Not always real data
Define the term Mode
Most frequently occurring value in a set of data
Describe the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Mode
Advantages: quick estimate. Only measure that can be used for nominal data. Disregards extreme scores.
Disadvantages: unstable
