Meaning Flashcards
What does Patricia Deegan mean by “being hard of heart is a strategy for survival?”
refers to the way people may emotionally shut down or distance themselves as a defense mechanism in response to trauma, hardship, or repeated challenges. By “hardening their heart,” they protect themselves from pain or vulnerability but may also lose their ability to fully connect with others or experience joy and growth.
When does existential anxiety or an existential crisis tend to occur?
They tend to arise during transitions, major life events ( Job change, Marriage, illness diagnostic)
What are the 3 (or 4) components of meaning according to Martela and Steger
- Coherence: Understanding how life events and experiences fit together.
- Purpose: Having goals and a sense of direction in life.
- Significance:You feel you contribute or make a difference. Breaking down the word significance — a “SIGN” of importance.
What are the 5 categories of sources of meaning according to Shnell?
1.Vertical self-transcendence: Orientation towards an immaterial,
supernatural power
2.Horizontal self-transcendence: Taking responsibility for (worldly)
affairs beyond one’s immediate concerns (ex: doing something for
future generations)
3.Self-actualisation: Employing, challenging, and fostering one’s
capacities.
4.Order: Holding on to values, practicality, decency, and the tried and
tested
5.Well-being and relatedness: Cultivating and enjoying life’s pleasures
in privacy and company
Viktor Frankl’s theory is that meaning is possible even through suffering, what is his main argument to back this up?
While we cannot always control our circumstances, we can choose our response, giving purpose to hardship. (Freedom of choice)
Health care and Mental health care has long based treatment on a traditional model of care. Luckily, we are now moving towards a model of recovery. What are the main differences between both models?
The model of recovery is more holistic and views recovery as a state that can be achieved even if the person is still symptomatic.
CHIME: Importantly, the model focuses on providing hope and optimism to the person (so they believe they can recover) and encouraging the person to find meaning and purpose even while living with a mental health issue and to not totally define themselves (identity) as their diagnosis.
Treatment decisions are a shared responsibility between the doctor and patient so the person feels they have control over their life (empowerment).
People are encouraged to reCONNECT with their communities (ex: find a job, go back to school, etc.)
