Flow+ deep work Flashcards
What is flow and how is it related to happiness?
Flow is an optimal state of consciousness of the person-evnvironment interaction and happiness come from optimal experiences
Flow involves enjoyment. What does this mean and how does it differ from pleasure?
Enjoyment is sense of reward, moving forward, accomplishment linked to the person exceed his ability farther to where he thought he could achieve while pleasure is the feeling of contentment where the set expectations as been met.
There are 8 traits of flow. Name 2
- Balance between challenge and skill
- An altered perception of time
What 2 elements must be optimally high, for one two experience flow?
Challenge and Skill must be high
According to Steven Kotler, what are the 5 flow triggers?
- Novelty
- Risk
- Complexity
- Unpredictability
- Patern Recognition
Can someone multitask effectively? If so, how? If not, why not?
According to the theory of psychic entropy, the answer is generally no. However, this is highly dependent on whether the tasks require similar amounts of attention, that is, whether the other “tasks” you are doing are distracting to the main task or not. In class, we discussed how a waiter can easily (and even experience flow) during a shift that involves significant multitasking. Similarly, we discussed listening to music that either has no lyrics, or does not make you “groove” and distract you. In those instances, music might actually help with focus.
What is the difference between deep work and shallow work?
Shallow work is performing non-cognitively demanding tasks you can do distracted like checking emails or replying to messages. While deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks like Writing a detailed research paper.
Out of all the scheduling philosophies, which one suits your schedule the best?
- Monastic : total immersion
- Bimodal : large chunk of deep work with space for activities (weekly, monthly basis)
- Rhythmic: Daily block of deep work in predictable schedule. Tine blocking
- Journalistic: fits deep work into brief, spontaneous moment, not for beginner
Is prioritizing downtime technically part of deep work? If so, why?
The brain need rest, downtime improve thinking, replenish our ability to practice deep work because our neurons get tired
