topical cs uses
treat inflammation, swelling, or itching associated with various skin conditions
topical cs administration
- Wash hands before and after application
- Clean and thoroughly dry the affected area of skin before application
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area and gently rub into skin
- Use on skin only
- Avoid high potency preparations on areas of thin, sensitive skin such as genitals, body folds, and eyelids
topical cs local side effects
More likely to occur with long-term use of higher potency agents
Thinning of skin
Irritation
Stretch marks
Skin discoloration
Bruising
“spidery” thin blood vessels (telangiectasia)
topical cs systemic side effects
-Rare, but may occur with prolonged use
higher potency at larger application site greater risk
-Mainly a concern in children who need frequent doses of high potency topical corticosteroids (can affect growth)
topical cs drug interxns
Less of a concern (compared to oral)
topical cs Precautions/Warnings:
- Do not use on weeping lesion
- Do not cover with occlusive dressing
topical cs Contraindications:
Systemic fungal infection
topical cs time of effect
- Itching can begin to decrease within 2-4 hours
- Full effect of decreased inflammation may not be seen for 18-24 hours
- It may be 3-7 days before evidence of decreased excoriation/hyperkeratosis becomes apparent
topical cs, What to monitor
- Symptom improvement or symptoms of irritation
- Prolonged use in specific patient populations
- Growth in children using high potency agent
