MCAS - Cells Flashcards
Golgi bodies
Proteins produced in the rough E.R. move here to be modified, sorted, and packaged for storage or excretion from cells.
Mitochondria
Convert chemical energy stored in food to compounds that cells can use.
Rough. E.R.
Site of protein synthesis. Contains ribosomes.
Smooth E.R.
Contains a collection of enzymes that perform specialized tasks. No ribosomes.
Cell membrane
Regulates what enters and exits the cell and provides protection and support.
Ribosome
Where proteins are assembled. Small particles of RNA and proteins found throughout the cytoplasm and rough E.R.
Vacuole
Used for storage. Much larger in plant cells.
Cytoplasm
Everything outside the nucleus.
Cytosol
The liquid the organelles are suspended in.
Nucleus
Contains nearly all of the cell’s DNA and is considered the brain or control center of the cell.
Nucleolus
A small, dense region in the nucleus where the assembly of ribosomes begins.
Cilia/Flagella
Tail-like projections that allow movement of a cell and are made of micro tubules. Cilia are short flagella.
Lysosome
Cleans up the cell. It digests lipids, carbs, and proteins into smaller molecules.
Cell wall
A hard, thick structure on the outside of cells that provides support and protection.
Chloroplast
Captures the energy from sunlight and converts it to chemical energy by photosynthesis.
