MCA Stroke Syndrome Flashcards
Primary Motor Cortex and Internal Capsule
contralateral hemiparesis (face and UE)
Primary Somatosensory Cortex and Internal Capsule
contralateral hemisensory loss (face and UE)
Broca’s Area (in dominant hemisphere)
non-fluent aphasia: hesitant speech with small vocabulary (can understand speech)
Wernicke’s Area
fluent aphasia: impaired comprehension of speech and word salad
Secondary Somatosensory Cortex
Astereognosis: cant recognize objects by touch
Apraxia: difficulty sequencing motor patterns
Secondary Visual Cortex Area of Dorsal Stream
Optic ataxia: impaired depth perception, spatial relations, inability to coordinate movements of contralateral side
Parietal Association Cortex
unilateral neglect
anosagnosia: unaware of deficits
Premotor Cortex
apraxia: difficulty sequencing motor patterns
Frontal Eye Field
impaired voluntary eye movements and preference for gaze to the ipsilateral field
Optic Radiations through Parietal + Temporal White Matter
visual field cuts: homonymous hemianopsia or quadrantanopsia
Basal Ganglia
hypokinesia signs: slow movements, shuffling gait, rigidity
