25
Can you be a part time student at a UC?
Usually, no.
26
If you take a class at a CC during fall/spring semester and take a break from school altogether, what happens?
You cannot reclassify as a freshman after the break, only as a junior.
27
How many units taken at a California Community College will make you eligible for TAG?
30
28
What is the CSU's "7 course pattern"?
The Golden 4 (Plan B) = Areas A1, A2, A3, & B4
29
What does "impacted" mean when looking at wesbite with applicant numbers?
Impacted = more applicants than spots available. When schools are impacted, applicants need more than the bare minimum (60 units + Golden 4)
30
Whe will CalGETC start?
CalGETC = every student required same Plan ; Starts Fall 2025
31
What are catalog rights?
Catalog rights protect the student from being held to additonal requirements that may be added to a later catalog. Basically, if a student has continuous enrollment in higher ed, they won't need to take additional classes that may become required for over time.
32
What has been a recent MC GE pattern change?
Area F has recently been added
33
What is MC's current catalog rights?
Continous semester (excluding summers)
34
What are CSU's current catalog rights?
One semester per calendar year (does not specify if summer is acceptable, but should be OK)
35

Math & Chem first
36
For competitive schols, what classes should already be done in the Fall of when students are applying?
Math classes should be done already
37
What classes should you recommend to take first for nursing majors?
Bio classes first. Bio always before anatomy.
38
Upon completion of MC's ADN program, students are eligible to do what?
Apply for the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses. Once they pass that test, they officially become licensed.
39
LVN Certificate of Achievement + GE classes = ?
Associate of Arts LVN ; This associate's degree makes students eligible to apply for Vocational Nurses licensure exam.
40
What kind of system is used to accept students into CCC's RN program?
A point system: Academic degrees/diplomas, relevant work experience, GPA, TEAS score (Test of Essential Academic Skills)
41
If a student is interested in nursing, what should you clarify?
Clarify specifically what the student is pursuing: RN, LVN, nursing assistant?
42
What website can you use to to see passing test rates for RNs?
NCLEX
43
Although an associates degree in nursing makes students eligible for nursing jobs, some hospitals prefer ?
Bachelors degree in nursing.
44
What is the easiest nursing path, and why?
ADN to RN because when a student transfers, only the upper level classes will be left.
45
In terms of degrees, what else should be clarified if student is interested in nursing?
ADN or BSN? Associates in nursing from CC or transfer for Bachelors in nursing only. Associates degree at CC will cover the clinical aspect of training. Basic entry BSN (2 year program) = student will need both clinical and upper level classes at 4-year university.
46
Basic entry BSN =
Student will need both clinical and upper level courses at 4-year. CC classes will only be GEs. BSN is most competitive option.
47
TEAS exam =
SAT for nursing school.
48
If a student decides on an associates degree in nursing from CC, what should be focused on?
Pre-reqs
49
If a student is looking to transfer, when do pre-reqs need to be completed by?
Pre-reqs should be completed the fall before transfer (year before first fall semester)
50
NCLEX nursing passing rates:
80% should be ballpark ; 90 is a competitve/good school. Anything lower than 80 might not be a good school
51
How is West Coast University a nursing option?
At West Coast University, B's are acceptable, but tuition is very expensive. Nurses usually make $70-80 a year so it's up to the student, but still a viable option.
52
Why are public universities competitive to get into? Especially for nursing?
Affordability
53
What could be another option for someone interested in nursing, but couldn't get accepted into a nursing program?
Bachelors degree in public health (or something similar) and then entry-level Masters in nursing
54
Rare to recommend what kind of schools for nursing?
UCs, because the classes will be different. UCs are more so for medical school.
55
How many TEAS exam attempts can nursing student have?
Usually 1. The second attempt would have to be 6 months after first failed attempt.
56
Is the TEAS exam (for nursing) online or in-person?
57
What online tool can you use if a school's catalog is N/A on Assist?
TAP + school's specific catalog -> Catalog website + program specific homepage

Are "support" courses on a school's agreeement still required?
Yes
62
Should bio or chem classes be completed first?
Bio = typically easier
63
Should students take more than 1 science class at a time?
Not a fan of this idea. Only if student is in a rush.
64
What is a good question to ask if you think a student has too many classes on their plate?
"Are you working rn?" No job = more time to study
65
Why aren't there usually nursing-specific counselors?
Because once students are accepted into a nursing program, everyone is taking the same classes basically
66
When is spring admission for CSUs? (Cal State Apply applications have to be in by?)
Aug 1-Aug 31
67
Are there placement exams at CCs for math, english, or reading?
No, not anymore.
68
Since CCs don't do placement exams for math, english, and reading, how are students placed?
Placement is now based on highschool GPA & highest level class that was completed (this change happened in 2018)
69
Does algebra need to be completed in order to do stats?
No
70
If a student gets placed in a higher level class, can they still take lower-level courses?
Sure, lower level courses are still available, but they would be non-credit and students can't use financial aid for them.
71
Why you shouldn't show a student a math problem to see if a class is a good fit or not:
IT'S ILLEGAL!
72
How does a student get placed for math, english, and reading classes if they were homeschooled?
Self-report placement
73

If a student is taking a course at another CC, make sure the equivalency has been evaluated already & good to go. How would you do that?
TES -> CID -> is the class on the schools ADT
81
If a student has a bad GPA, chances are...
That student won't be able to get into another UC
82
Can military receive units for active service?
Yes. Area E = lifelong training section
83
Try to remember that appointments should revolve around:
Student questions, rather than walking them through something step-by-step. If a student is capable of doing something at home, have them do it at home.
84
Is there an admission advantage for ethnicity/background?
By law, there is no advantage.
85
What is regional accredidation? And why does it make classes transfer easier?
Regional accreditation assures colleges that classes from certain educational institutions meet a certain standard of student learning.
86
Is regional accreditation or institutional accreditation more significant?
Regional ; Insitutional = ITT tech (provides degrees but more difficult for classes to transfer)
87
What does an "RP" stand for on a transcript?
It means that a course has been repeated. The purpose of this is that the class (repeated more than once) won't be factored into the student's GPA
88
What is the limit to how many times a student can re-take a class?
Without a petition, 3 times is the limit.
89
Is it OK to list classes on an application that are not transferable?
It's OK to list them, but make sure that the 'transferable" box is not checked off.
90
What is academic renewal?
Poor grades can be removed if class is retaken with a better grade. (This is usually at CCs, not CSUs or private schools)
91
How many units is academic renewal limited to?
Every campus varies, but usually around 10 units.
92
Can a student's academic status at a CC be "junior" or "senior"?
No. Regardless of how many years of schooling, a CC student's academic status will always be freshman or sophmore because CCs don't have junior or senior level classes (freshman status = up to 30 units)
93
How many units would have to be completed for a student to be considered a sophmore?
30 units
94
On an application, should all AP test scores be included?
Should probably just use scores of 3 or higher (passing scores)
95
What classes are the "Golden 4"?
Oral communication + written communication + critical thinking + math
96
What are a couple of things that EOPS offers?
Priority registration + financial assistance
97
In terms of the golden four, what classes should be taken by summer for spring admission?
Written communication & math (A2 & B4) ; A1 & A3 can be taken during the Fall but student has to at least be eligible for Golden 4 (oral communication & critical thinking)
98
Why is a graduation petition form vital?
It has to be completed for when a 4-year university reaches out to the CC to confirm that the student is eligible
99
When should the graduation petition form be completed by?
Semester before student's last semester
100
Differences in what is put before a student's SURF ID number: Students vs Counselors

101
What is the most common degree at MC?
ADT = Associate's degree for transfer
102
What is the 2nd most common degree at MC?
Liberal Arts (behind ADT = #1). Combined, these two are 90% of students
103
What "plan" is there normally not a lot of at the transfer center?
Plan A. This is because Plan A is for MC only. CSU = Plan B, IGETC = CSU & UC
104
What can waive the IGETC language area for students?
Official HS transcript showing two years of language. As long as the 2nd semester of the 2nd year is a C- or better, there is no impact on GPA or units, the area will be competely waived.
105
For students who don't have HS transcripts (out of country) what could they potentially do to waive the language area of IGETC if they are already fluent in another language?
Students can take a test with the specific language department that can provide proof that the student is fluent in the language. As an associate counselor BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THIS TEST POTENTIALLY TAKES MONEY AWAY FROM THAT TEACHER BECAUSE THE STUDENT DOESN'T HAVE TO TAKE THEIR CLASSES NOW
106
If you have any questions on IB transcripts (international) what is recommended to do?
Can always follow-up with the student's HS counselor.
107
What is a GE certification request form for?
It confirms for a 4-year university that GEs have been completed at the CC. This form should be sent only to a school that the student has been accepted to and the student wants to go there.
108
Can a student do P/NP for a major prep course?
No. Preferably not for Golden 4 either, but will still technically work. It's also important to note that some courses might look like GE, but are really major prep so be careful on that.
109
What is the unit limit for P/NP rn?
Maximum of 15 units.
110
When is the deadline for a student to choose for a class to be P/NP?
Since COVID, the deadline is now the last week of class.

112
Be careful when filling out a CSU application, because ?
Contacts cannot be changed once they are submitted.
113
What is an ADT?
An ADT (associate's degree for transfer) = taking the same lower level classes that a student would be taking at a CSU (at a CC). ADT classes -> any CSU ; rather than taking extra classes to meet the needs of multiple schools + while also getting an associate's degree at the same time. This is a gurantee to the CSU system, not a specific CSU (and only certain majors have ADTs as well).
114
For an ADT, what increases the changes of getting into a local CSU?
Going to a local CC.
115
What are the 3 most common CC paths?
ADT (CSU) + TAG (UC) + General (60 units + assist)
116
What is TAG?
TAG (Transfer Admissions Guranteed) is a transfer pathway between CCCs & UCs.

What are the 3 UCs that do not accept TAG?
UCLA, UCSD, and UC Berkley. UCSF also does not because it only offers graduate school programs.
119
Who qualifies for TAG?
Students transferring directly from a CCC (including international students as long as they have a VISA) + must have completed 30 transferable units from one or more CCCs. (Also, depending on the specific UC, may also require transfer level Math & English)
120
Who cannot apply for UC TAG?
Students who have already earned a degree + students who have previously enrolled at a UC during a regular term.
121
How do students apply for UC TAG?
Through the UC TAP Planner (input all courses taken at your CC)
122
For TAG, does the student's degree they are applying for have to be the same one that they have at CC?
Yes
123
If a student's TAG has been accepted, do they have to go to that school?
No, the school has to save them a spot, but the student isn't locked in necessarily.
124
What is important to look at for TAG students?
TAG pages on university specific website. Will show assist majors/classes + if IGETC is required or not.
125
What are 3 important things to keep in mind for students interested in TAG?
IGETC + 30 units are required by the end of student's first year + unit limitations for TAG (unit limitations and unit limitations for specific course areas can be found at the bottom of assist page)
126
What is the UC "Senior Standing" maximum semester amount of units?
80-90 (Depending on the specific UC)
127

What students are relevant to UC Senior Standing?
Students who have previously attended a UC, are now at a CCC, and are trying to re-transfer back to a UC.
129
When looking at UC Senior Standing, there are upper and lower level units to consider. Are CSU/out of state units considered upper or lower?
Upper
130
What is the maximum amount of lower level units that a student can have when considering UC Senior Standing?
70 max
131
How do you transfer semester units to quarter units?
Multiply quarter units by 1.5 = semester units
132
This note is a reminder to study UC Senior Standing!
133
How is GPA calculated?
Grade points divided by units attempted (To get grade points -> units times grade) (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0) (Example: 3 units with an A = 12 grade points)
134
When calculating a GPA, how many decimal points should be included?
Keep 3 decimal points (Example: 2.286)
135
What letter grade considers a class to be "completed"?
D = completed (but not passed) (D's impact dependent on Plan A, B, C, etc + specific major) (Golden 4 classes still need to be a C or better though)
136
How many units are needed to be completed in order to be eligible for transfer?
60 units completed
137
Does a Passing grade (P) impact GPA, units attempted, and units completed?
A "P" does not impact GPA or units attempted, only units completed.
138
When a student repeats a class, are the units being replaced or added on top?
Units are replaced
139
Important to remember about USF's GPA tool!
USF tool doesn't take into consideration repeated classes
140
Where can you look to determine a major's specific GPA requirements?
Major specific GPA requirements can be found on Assist or the specific school's page
141
This note is a reminder to study academic renewal!
142
This note is a reminder to look at my transcripts and practice figuring out my GPA by hand!

CSUs (USC won't though)
144
Degree applicable units! Works towards associates degree vs not necessarily transferable?
145
Credit Career Totals on the bottom of transcripts?
146
What are transfer codes for on transcripts?
Transfer codes are the numbers at the beginning of class name on a transcript -> will let you know if a class is transferable or not
147
How do you come up with a student's GPA?
Grade points divided by units attemtpted (can combine multiple/different units earned from different schools and this will still work)
148
What are some online tools/resources that you could show students who are unsure about their career?
16 personalities + O*Net Interest Profiler + CA Career Zone (job $)
149
What are a couple of factors to have students keep in mind if they are unsure about their career pursuit?
What kind of income they are comfortable with -> "financially stable" & longevity of their body (ex: electrician in their 50s)
150
Whats better for a student? An A in a regular class or a B in an honors class?
A in regular class
151
What are the Golden 4?
Written comm (ENGL), Oral comm (COMM), Math, and Critical thinking (PHIL or PSYCH are a couple of examples)
152
What is an ADT?
Associates Degree for Transfer: One set of classes for multiple CSUs. Gurantee to the CSU system, not a specific CSU. If a student applies to multiple CSUs after completing an ADT, and doesn't get into any of the applied schools, the student will be forwarded to a CSU that will accept them.
153
For the most part, when do CSUs accept students for transfer?
During the fall. Some CSUs are open for some majors during winter/spring.
154
What needs to be finished by summer if the student is trying to transfer the upcoming winter/spring?
60 units and their Golden 4
155
When is the fall application period?
Oct 1-Nov 30 (depending on the day of the week, for example this year it's Dec 2)
156
One application = multiple schools applied, not one per school is for ?
CSUs. One CSU app for the whole system
157
What is a good way of helping students with their CSU application, but not walking them through every question?
Tell student to fill out what they can and then if they have any questions, then reach out
158
For schools like SDSU, or popular schools that are impacted, what is important to keep in mind application wise?
SDSU does not want official transcripts. They will ask for supplemental instead. Supplemental will include general questions like GPA, certain class grades, etc.
159
Whats the difference between Bachelors of ARCH vs Bachelors of Arts in Architecture?
Bachelors of ARCH is required for professional licensure
160
What does it mean when a major is impacted?
More applicants than available spots
161
What is an important admission priority to keep in mind for CSUs?
For impacted CSUs, local students (local HS or CCC ; every college has different requirements) can receive priority for certain majors/schools.
162
Study AB540!
163
When students are filling out their CSU application, should they enter all of the classes they have taken? Or just the ones that are transferable?
All of them
164
When students are filling out their CSU application, how do they enter all of the classes they have taken?
They have to manually enter them
165
What is important to remember in terms of what classes students should enter on their CSU application?
That they have to enter all of the classes they have taken AND the classes they plan to take the following semester (because they will be applying a year before they plan to admit)
166
For transfer students from a CCC, do SAT and ACT scores really matter?
No, not really
167
Once students complete all of the classes needed for an associates degree at a CCC, do they automatically receive their degree?
No, they have to submit a graduation petition. This petition form can be found under MC credit forms (and it's free! unlike 4 year universities like SDSU for example)
168
When will students usually hear back form a university on if they were accepted for the upcoming fall semester?
Usually between FEB-MAY
169
If something changes on a student's application between submission and admission, what should be done?
Just update the app so that CSU is aware
170
What would happen if a student is applies for a CSU, hasn't completed a golden 4 class but is planning on completing it the next semester, gets accepted to CSU, but fails golden 4 class?
Admission will be taken away! Golden 4 classes are mandatory

DSPS students at CCCs are automatically eligible for EOPS. Is the same for CSUs and UCs?
No. CSUs you have to apply on CSU application. UCs you have to apply around the same time you submit the UC application, but it is a seperate application for EOP.
