Maximising Work Life Flashcards
Calling = Pleasure / Pain
Minimise pain, maximise pleasure
Calling energises, job depletes. Want to > have to
See myself as a vehicle for something bigger than myself. What would I pursue if money wasn’t an issue?
Reflect on time of deep sense of pleasure overriding any pain a normal mortal might have felt.
Surrender to nature. It’s one of the most courageous and powerful acts anyone can ever pursue. Don’t regret!
Workaholism = What are you running from? / what are you living for?
What 5 things do I live for most? Focus on them. Anything else takes time away from them.
Underneath the surface of any addict are deeper emotions that become hidden by the addiction.
Busyness is not a measure of self importance. Even God rested on the 7th day. Workaholism violates Yin Yang. Family suffers. Happiness suffers
“Practise makes perfect” but perfect doesn’t exist!!! Perfect standards produce negative consequences.
Flow = Skill / Challenge
* goal of flow equal to 1.0
Be clear with the goal. Have the challenge 4% higher than my capabilities. Receive immediate feedback.
Involves a loss of self consciousness. Temporarily detach to self. Take down the boundaries I applied to myself.
Concentrate/Focus exclusively on the activity. Have a sense of personal control over the situation. Make the activity intrinsically rewarding.
Moving 2 steps forward, 1 step back is the perfect path. Take setbacks positively.
Mastery = 10000 hrs of practise
Focus on journey > destination
Be less focused on the outcome/results and more focused on the practise itself.
Feeling energised with what I’m doing and being all I can be by doing it will rack up the number of hours without noticing.
Those Good but not Stars practised about 20% less
Curiosity = Wonder + Awe
Wonder = joyful innocent surprise with a desire to know more Awe = Being humbled by something bigger than we are. Sometimes brings fear due to the miraculous, untamed world.
Make curiosity a wonder-ful habit. Find awe
Special Secret: 4Cs: curiosity, confidence, courage, constancy
Be open to learning, loving, stumbling, life. I don’t know what I don’t know. Resilience comes from having more options, coming from an open/curious mind. Do something new
Obtain a growth mindset. See failure as a path to improvement.
Question. Who, What, Where, When, Why, How
