⭐️Matter Flashcards
Energy
The capacity to do work
ex. light energy, chemical energy, heat, mechanical and electrical, potential, kinetic
Phycial change/property
Characteristics of a substance that can be determined without changing the substance
ex. ** NaCl(salt)»»» NaCl (aq)
(add H2O)
Chemical change/property
Describes whether a substance reacts, or does not react, with other substances to form a NEW product
ex combustibility, tendency to corrode, rusting, any “react”
Extensive properties
Properties that depend on amount of matter
ex. Mass volume weight height
Intesive properties
properties that don’t depend on the amount of matter
ex. density odor taste color BP MP hardness ductility malleability
Pure Substance
Any variety of matter that has all identical properties CHEMICAL separation/combination
Elements
pure substance that cannot be broken down
building blocks of matter
(Metals/nonmetals)
Compounds
2+ different elements CHEMICALLY combined in definite proportions
Mixtures
Combination of two or more pure substances that keep their identities and properties
- physically combined
- no ratio
- no bonds
Homogeneous mixtures
- EVEN distribution constant ratio
- PHYSICAL separation/combination
- solution
- dissolves (saltwater)
- distillation=separating mixture by boiling points
Heterogeneous mixtures
•UNEVEN distribution •PHYSICAL separation/combination •filtration=straining to separate mixture •definite boundaries ex sand/water
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space
ex. air
Examples of homogeneous mixtures
Salt water, air
Examples of pure substances
Table salt, sodium, metal, sugar (elements and compounds)
How to tell if it’s water
Ph of 7, density, taste, waft, boils 100 freezes 0
Endothermic
Energy enters, bonds break
Exothermic
Energy released, bonds form
Law of conservation of energy
Energy neither created nor destroyed only changes form E=mc2 EINSTEIN
Law of conservation of matter/mass
Matter/mass neither created nor destroyed only changes form LAVOISIER
Aqueous
State of matter containing water as a solvent (aq)
Properties of metal
Luster, good conductor, heat/electricity, malleable, ductile, “the force is strong”..high melting point MP/boiling point BP, hard
(Na, Ag, Au)
Properties of nonmetals
Opposite of metals, brittle, dull
C, S, O
