MATERIALS + TECHNOLOGY - Thermal and Moisture Protection Flashcards
Surface runoff
Water flow that occurs when soil in infiltrated to full capacity
Water Infiltration
Process in which water on the ground surface enters the soil
Moisture migration
the passage of moisture into/ though a material or construction in the form of water vapor due to a difference in vapor pressure in the two faces
Thermal Expansion
Materials expand and contract due to temperature variations
water table
boundary between aerated and water saturated soil that can rise and fall seasnally
catch basin
a reservoir in which debris and sediment from runoff may settle before it enters the storm drain
Invert
the lowest point of lowest inside surface of a drain, sewer pipe etc.
culvert
drain or channel that permits the passage of water below ground. typically a large diameter concrete or metal pipe often used under road
storm drain
underground conduit used to carny rainwater from the catch basin to a body of water
drain tile
perforated pipe surrounded by granular fill used the release hydrostatic pressure from foundations and retain walls
vapor barries
plastic or foil sheet that resist the diffusion of moisture through a wall, ceiling, floor assemble, location on the warm side of the insulation
heating degree day
a unit that measures how often outdoor daily dry-bulb temperatures fall below an assumed base, normally 65
Bulk Moisture
is the flow of water through holes, cracks, and other discontinuities into the basement wall
Capillary Action
occurs when water wicks into the cracks and pores or porous building materials, such as masonry blocks, concrete and wood
