What is material deprivation ?
A lack of those physical necessities that are seen as normal for life in today’s society. WC people are more likely to face MD.
What does Palmer say about ethnic minorities with MD?
-Almost 1/2 of all minority children live in low-income households, VS 1/4 of white children.
-Ethnic minorities are 2x to be unemployed compared to whites.
-Ethnic minorities are 3x more likely to be homeless.
-Almost 1/2 of Bangladeshi and Pakistani earned under $7 per hour, VS a 1/4 of white workers.
What are the reasons for ethnic minorities to be at a greater risk of MD, resulting in unemployment, low pay and overcrowding?
-Many live in economically depressed areas with high unemployment rates and low wage rates.
-CF such as ‘purdah’ in Muslim women, preventing them from working.
-Lack of language skills and foreign qualifications not being recognised by UK employers.
-Asylum seekers may not be allowed to take work.
-Racial discrimination in the labour and housing market.
How do these inequalities reflect on the schools with pupils from ethnic minorities?
The MD is shown through statistics of who has FSM.
What are the studies of Indian pupils in achievement?
-Their achievements are generally above average, likely to be from ‘better off backgrounds.
-For example- they are the ethnic group who are most likely to attend private schools, at 2x rate of whites and 5x rate of blacks.
Does class override ethnicity in achievement?
Failing to take the different class positions from ethnic groups when comparing achievements can cause over-estimating the effect of poverty and material deprivation.
What did Modood’s study find about MD and social class factors?
The effects of low income families’ pupils were much more for white students when compared to other ethnic groups.
