What is the main management of mastitis?
Antibiotics - Flucloxacillin
Should breast feeding be continued? Why?
Yes because it prevents the stasis of breast milk and colonisation of bacteria
What are the signs and symptoms?
- tenderness
- swelling
- fever
- Erythema
- Systemic features
What are the causes of mastitis?
When milk is not emptied from the breast
-stasis causes blockage
What are risk factors?
- Tight fitting clothes/ bra
- baby not fully latching
- Cracked nipple
- Infection from the baby’s nose
- ## Nipple piercing
What are all the potential organisms that cause mastitis?
S. aureus Streptococcus E. coli Salmonella Candida (rare) Crytpcoccus (rare)
What are the two main types of mastitis?
Pregnancy
(Peurperal mastitis) mastitis related to pregnancy
Non-pregnancy related
Who should you refer to for a women who has mastitis with breast feeding?
Breast feeding nurse, in order to teach them properly
