LCIS - Lobar Carcinoma in situ Flashcards
What is lobar carcinoma in situ
An incidental finding of cellular characteristics in under microscopy
How is the condition diagnosed?
By laboratory diagnosis
What is the main micropathological feature?
Distortion and expansion of lobules and acini
What is the an acini?
The functional unit that make up a lobule
What are classic genetic features of lobar cancer in situ?
Low grade ER (estrogen) and PR (progesterone) positive cancer
Is LCIS negative for HER2 (Human Epidermal Growth Factor 2)
Yes
What is the process of diagnosis
- Mammogram
- Core Needle Biopsy
- Fine needle biopsy
Is Lobar Carcinoma in situ have a risk for invasive carcinoma?
Yes
What is the management of lobar carcinoma in situ?
Not all LCIS develop into an invasive carcinoma. Therefore observation is the preferred approach.
Surgery may be needed later
Tamoxifen, and screening are used to reduce risk
More aggressive treatment bilateral prophylactic mastectomy
