Benign breast tumour composed of stromal and epithelial cells

What is used for diagnosis?
Often benign however investigations are needed to exclude more serious pathology

- Needle Biopsy

What are the signs and symptoms of a fibroadenoma?
- Firm solitary painless lump
- Mobile
- Slowly growing in child bearing women
What are the causes of fibroadenoma?
Hormone related
High no. of births
Low OCP use
What is the management of a fibroadenoma?
Mostly monitored - clinical follow-up
Some are surgically removed
When surgically removing a fibroadenoma why must it be ensured that an extra margin must be removed?
To prevent the formation of phyllodes tumour
What is phyllodes tumour
Large fast growing tumours that grow from periductal stromal cells
