Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Flashcards
What is invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC)
- Most common type of breast cancer - 80%
- Cancer that has broken through the wall of the duct and invaded breast tissue
What are the signs and symptoms of invasive ductal carcinoma?
- Starting there are no symptoms
- Swelling
- dimpling
- breast pain
- inversion of nipple
- thickening of skin on breast
- nipple discharge
- lump in axilla
What is the diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma?
- Mammogram
- USS
- Biopsy - needle
What is the treatment of IDC?
- Surgery is the first treatment
- Chemo is may be first given to shrink cancer
- Local treatment
- Systemic treatment
What are the local treatments?
Lumpectomy - removes the tumor and tissue around it
Mastectomy
What are the 3 types of mastectomy?
Partial - removal of a portion of the breast
Simple/total - removal of the breast tissue- no lymph nodes or muscle
Radical - removal of breast, muscle and lymph nodes (not common)
What else is often done with mastectomy?
Setinal node dissection - looks at the sentinel node (the first node the tumour drains to)
- a radioactive dye is used to identify it and is biopsied for metastasis
- If cancer is found, more nodes need to be taken out
Axillary node dissection
- removal of group of nodes in the axilla
- determine any spread for cancer
What is a common complication of lymph node dissection?
Lymphoedema
What are the 3 types of radiation therapy?
- External beam
directed at entire breast after lumpectomy - Internal partial breast irradiation
Radioactive seeds and pellets are placed into the breast
-External partial breast irradiation
Shoots at the highest rate of reoccurance
