Massage III Flashcards
Abnormal enlargement of a segment of the body.
Swelling
Accumulation of fluid in cells, tissues, or serous cavities.
Edema
Increased permeability of capillaries, decreased plasma protein osmotic pressure, increase pressure and capillaries and venules, lymphatic flow obstruction.
4 main causes of Edema.
Excessive fluid in the joint capsule indicating irritation or inflammation of the synovium.
Effusion
An increase in extracellular fluid volume that is localized in a dependent area such as a limb.
Dependent Edema
Edema that retains indentation produced by the pressure of palpation.
Pitting Edema
The infiltration of subcutaneous tissues by mucoid material.
Solid Edema
Accumulation of abnormal amounts of length fluid and associated swelling of subcutaneous tissues that results from the obstruction, destruction, or hypoplasia of lymph vessels.
Lymphedema
A one-way drainage system designed to rid the tissues of unwanted material and excess fluid.
Lymph System
_____ & ______ work together to ensure healthy circulation of fluids in the body.
Lymphatic system and Cardiovascular system
Primary lymphedema, secondary lymphedema, trauma, radiation, burn, obstruction by tumor, scar, inflammation, or parasite, idiopathic lymphedema, postoperative edema, venous ulcer, and arterial ulcer.
Indications for Lymphedema
Contraction of muscle, PROM, exercise, massage, compression garments, intermittent pressure devices, and elastic wraps.
Factor that compress lymph system
Extreme temperatures, factors that may cause infection, blunt trauma, use of alcohol and nicotine, and travel wearing a well-fitting compression garment and elevate limb during flight.
Precautions for lymph patients
Maintain excellent nutrition, obesity, perform meticulous skin and nail care, exercise daily, treat infections promptly and vigorously, seek Rx for even the slightest episode of lymphedema, use of hypoallergenic soaps and fragrances.
Continued Precautions for lymph patients.
Acute infection, active cancer, CHF, and radiation.
Contraindications for lymphedema
