MASSAGE Flashcards
an excellent form of passive exercise. It is systemic rubbing and manipulation of different parts of the body for therapeutic benefits.
● The word massage is derived from the Greek word ‘massein’, or the French word ‘masser’, which both mean: to kneed.
Massage
PURPOSES OF MASSAGE
● To promote Relaxation
● To reduce muscle spasm
● To improve Blood flow
● To increase Venous drainage
● To prevent injuries
● To promote flexibility
Apply light and repetitive compression and effleurage strokes, repeat about 5-7 times.
The application of pressure should be about30mmHg or the weight of a nickel resting on yourskin.
Use ½ to 1 inch effleurage strokes or circular strokes.
Keep your body and hands relaxed when applying strokes.
Pumping: 3 rhythmic compression strokes
Sweeping: A series of short, superficial effleurage strokes that sweep proximally.
a smooth, gliding stroke used to relax tissue.
Effleurage
kneading, picking up, wringing, skin rolling] - the squeezing, rolling or kneading that follows effleurage.
➔ Tapotement (percussion) [clapping
Petrissage
kneading, picking up, wringing, skin rolling] - the squeezing, rolling or kneading that follows effleurage.
Petrissage (pressure)
clapping, beating, hacking, pounding] - a short alternating tap done with cupped hand, fingers or the edge of hands
Tapotement (percussion)
deep, circular movements that cause layer of tissue to rub against each other, helping to increase blood flow and break down scar tissue
Friction
Deep tissue massage is best for giving to certain painful attention to certain painful, stiff “trouble spots” in your body
● The massage therapist use slow deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layer of muscles, tendons or other tissue deep under your skin
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
○ Increase blood flow, histamine release and temperature
○ Decreased heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure
Cardiovascular System
Increase flexibility, decrease neuromuscular excitability, edema, reduction stretch muscle and scar tissue
Neuromuscular System
DOTS
Directly Observed Therapy Short-course
Objectives of DOTS
1.. Early identification of presumptive TB & prompt diagnosis
2. To cure or successfully treat DS-TB & DR-TB patients
3. To prevent development of active TB by providing TB preventive treatment
