INJECTIONS Flashcards
Intramuscular (IM) Injections:
- Deltoid muscle: Located in the upper arm, commonly used for small volumes of medication.
- Vastus lateralis muscle: Located on the side of the thigh, often used for larger volumes and for infants.
3.Ventrogluteal muscle: Located on the hip, preferred site for larger volumes and for adults.
4.Dorsogluteal muscle: Located on the buttocks, less commonly used due to risk of sciatic nerve injury.
Subcutaneous (SC) Injections:
Abdomen: Below the belly button, often used for insulin injections.
Thigh: Front of the thigh, easily accessible for self-administration.
Upper arm: Outer aspect of the upper arm, similar to the deltoid region but administered into the subcutaneous tissue.
Lower back: Just above the buttocks, an alternative site.
Intradermal (ID) Injections
Forearm: Inner surface of the forearm, commonly used for tuberculosis (TB) testing.
Upper back: Below the shoulder blades, occasionally used for allergy testing.
Outer aspect of the upper arm: Less common but sometimes used for various skin tests.
