Mass Spectrometry Flashcards
name the four processes of mass spectrometry
- sample into gas phase: A(1) + B(s) + C(g)
- ionise A+(g) + B+(g) C+(g)
- mass selection B+
- detection number of B+ ions
what are the three types of sampling methods in mass spectrometry?
gas, liquids, solids
how is gas measured?
injected directly into a vaccum
how are liquids analysed with mass spectrometry? three steps
when you spray the liquid into a vaccum using a charged nozzle.
the droplets break up and the solvents evaporate
molecules then become charged - so dont need to seperate as the ionise step
how are solids measured with mass spectrometry?
use a plasma to ablate (to remove or dissipate by melting etc) molecules off the surface. molecules become charged so dont need a secondary ionisation step
what are the four common implementations for analysing solids ?
MALDI
SIMS
LAESI
DESI
