Mass Movement Flashcards
What is the loose material
The loose material is regolith
What are the influences on mass movement
Gradient➖ fastest when slope is steep
water content➖ makes regolith heavier and acts as a lubricant enables it to move quickly and easily
Human activity➖ cuttings into sides of the hills
Vegetation➖ roots of trees and plants bind the regolith together and slows the rate of mass movement
What are the types of Mass movement
Soil creep ➖slowest type of Mass movement happens and gentle slopes cracked buildings roads tilted Telegraph and fences and curved tree trunks are signs of soil creep
Land slides➖ sudden and very fast movements of soil and rock triggered by excavating hillsides by sea erosion are signs and heavy rainfall
Mudflows ➖moving rivers of rock soil and water lahars are very dangerous mudflows from volcanic activity
Bogburts➖occur in upland areas when Peat is saturated after heavy rainfall
What is mass movement
The movement downslope of loose material by gravity
