Mary Wollstonecraft Flashcards
What were women not allowed to do
Rarely allowed land ownership, employment. Little legal protection against violence from spouse and no option to divorce. Could not vote for who governed them, a violation of ‘government by consent.’
A vindication of the rights of the woman
Argued that woman appeared inferior to men due to lack of education.
‘I do not isha them to have power over men; but over themselves.’
Rational and independent beings capable of reason
And deserve same educational opportunities as men.
Unequal education confined them to subordinate roles in society.
Wanted a change in the way society views and educated women. With education they can make decisions independently and contribute equally to society.
Formal equality
Under the law and equal rights for woman.
Equal rights under the law; voting, property, opportunities in employment.
Treatment of women was against reason, should be treated as rational, given freedom and rights and education develop potential like men.
England was limiting itself so now women’s pursuit for progress would benefit society and economy.
