Mary Queen Of Scotts Flashcards
Mary
Born 8th December 1542 and became Scottish Queen at six days old. Her mother was from a powerful French family and she spent most of her life in France. Heir to English throne (Elizabeth’s second cousin) and had no issues with her legitimacy (unlike Elizabeth).
Scottish protestant Lord’s rebellion
1559- Protestant Lords in Scotland rebel against Mary. In 1560 the treaty of Edinburgh ends it. After a scandal, they rebel again in 1567 and Mary is forced to abdicate and is imprisoned. She escapes and tries to raise an army in 1568 but is defeated and flees to England.
Treaty of Edinburgh
1560- ends protestant lord’s rebellion and Mary is told to give up her claim to the English throne but she refuses to.
Mary returns to Scotland
1561- Francis II of France (Mary’s husband) dies and Mary returns to Scotland
Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley
1565, marries Mary. 1566 Mary gives birth to James. 1567- Darnley is murdered and Mary marries Earl of Bothwell.
Darnley’s murder
1567- was killed in an explosion at Kirk o’Field house in Edinburgh. Suspicious because he’d previously organised the murder of Mary’s friend David Rizzo and Mary only seemed to forgive him.
1569 onwards
Mary is placed under house arrest in England after Elizabeth was advised by Francis Walshingham.
Why they didn’t trial Mary until 1587
If found guilty:
Elizabeth would be supporting the diposing of an annointed monarch who was also her cousin.
If found innocent:
Mary could raise an army with foreign support and pose a threat to England
