Mary , Queen Of Scots Flashcards
How did Mary have an heir to the throne
She was the granddaughter of Margaret Tudor
Mary was Catholic .What did this mean ?
Her claim to the throne was supported by catholics at home and abroad
Why was Elizabeth reluctant to name Mary as her heir ?
Shw thought making Mary, Queen of Scots her heir it would encourage Catholic plots at home and abroad which would overthrow Elizabeth and make Mary queen.
Mary’s relationship Lord Darnely ?
In 1565, Mary married the Scottish nobleman , Lord Darnley. The marriage was very ugly as Darnley was convinced that Mary and David Rizzio ( her personal secretary ) were having an affair. In 1566, a group of Scottish nobles accompanied by Lord Darnley stabbed Rizzio to death.
How did Mary react to Lord Darnley killing her secretary David Rizzio ?
In 1567, Lord Darnley was murdered. Many people believed Mary and the Earl of Bothwell were behind the murder. These suspicions were confirmed when the two got married a few months later. The marriage with the Earl of Bothwell was unpopular with the Scottish nobles. They rebelled against Mary, they imprisoned her and forced her to abdicate ( give up the throne ) to her one year old son , James
How did Mary flee to England ?
In 1568, Mary escaped prison and raised an army. Her army was defeated so she fled to the south of England
Why was Elizabeth not willing to help Mary regain control of Scotland ?
Mary’s claim to the English throne meant that she would be a constant threat of invasion in the North if Mary regained power in Scotland
What happened to Mary when she went to England ?
Mary was imprisoned by Elizabeth and an inquiry was set up whether she was involved in the murder of Lord Darnley
Why did Elizabeth not want either a guilty or not guilty verdict
If Mary was guilty : verdict would lend support to the Scottish nobles who overthrew Mary, their legitimate queen.
If Mary was not guilty : This would force Elizabeth to release Mary from prison.Once free Mary might overthrow Elizabeth.
What was the result of the inquiry ?
The inquiry did not reach a verdict. This enabled Elizabeth to keep Mary imprisoned.Elizabrth hoped having Mary imprisoned meant she wouldn’t be at the centre of Catholic plots for the next 20 years but this was not the case
