Marxist Perspective Flashcards
What did Gordon come up with?
Criminogenic capitalism, by capitalisms very definition it causes crime as it exploit’s the working class. For example, poverty may mean that crime is the only way to survive, crime may be the only way to obtain consumer goods and alienation and lack of social control may lead to non utilitarian crimes such as violence and vandalism. Competition is encouraged for everyone which is what leads to white collar crime. Crime is a rational response to capitalism in all social classes.
What shows that laws are a result of the ruling class in the UK?
The House of Lords and property rights.
What shows that those who oppose the ruling class are criminalised?
The right to protest laws in the UK.
What is a critism of Gordon?
Non utilitarian crimes and exist. It also doesn’t consider the fact that people with psychological issues may be more likely to commit crimes.
What did Chambliss come up with?
Laws that protect private property are the corner stone of the capitalist economy, law enforcement serve the needs of the bougeraise. Organized crime is a major operation in Western capitalist society. Authorities often turn a blind eye to this as such high level figures are often involved in the crimes themselves.
What does Snider argue?
The capitalist state is reluctant to pass laws that regulate the activities of business that may impact on their profitability.
What does Pearce argue?
Laws that appear to benefit the working class such as health and safety rules are actually just part of the caring face of capitalism, creating a false class consciousness. The real reason for health and safety laws is to keep the working class in work so the bougeraise can continue to exploit them.
Why does the neo Marxist perspective differ from the Marxist?
Neo Marxists view traditional Marxism as too deterministic. People can commit crimes out of economic necessity.
What type of view does Taylor et al take?
They take a neo Marxist and voluntarist view. Crime is a choice, criminals are not passive but they are trying to change society through deliberate criminal acts. As a result, they want a classless socalist society where people wont be labelled as deviant.
What 3 ideas does neo Marxism take from traditional Marxism?
- Crime needs to be looked at through the wider context of the act eg the distribution of wealth within society. 2. You need to look at if certain criminals get treated differently from others. 3. You have to look if the act could be a act of rebellion against capitalism.
What 3 ideas does neo Marxism take from interactionalism?
- Things about why the criminal committed an act needs to be considered. 2. The meaning of an act such as vandalism. 3. The effect of labelling and why it leads t deviancy amplification in some cases and not others.
What does TNC stand for?
Transnational Corporation
What is Ian Taylor say about TNCs?
TNC’s have moved their production to cheaper countries which has caused to Britain to become de industrialized. Unemployment has increased deprivation which increases criminal behavior. Those who have no jobs dependency are also more likely to turn to things such as alcoholism and drug related behavior.
What does Graham Taylor say about TNCs?
It is them who are commiting the crimes looking at green crimes such as shells oil spillage in Nigeria. White collar crime is increasingly undetected.
What are 2 strengths of neo Marxism?
- They help locate crime in the context of a wider society based on class inequality. 2. They give us a greater understanding of white collar crime.
